A Radon test involves setting Radon measurement devices in a home to detect average radon levels over a given period of time. IEMA and NRPP require a minimum of 48 hours of data to be a valid short-term test. Radon monitors will stay in the home unit sufficient data is recorded for the short term test. Short-term tests are the ideal measurement period for a real estate transaction. Long term tests are available for customers that already reside in the testing location.

What is Radon?

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that originates from rock and soil gas. Radon can enter homes through perimeter gaps, slab cracks or other imperfections in the home where the structure is in contact with soil. When Radon decay products are inhaled, they can cause damage to the cells and tissues of the lungs. Radon is the 2nd leading cause of lung cancer, after cigarettes. Radon is responsible for nearly 21,000 Lung cancer deaths per year and nearly 1,100 lung cancer deaths per year in Illinois.

Health organizations have agreed that a Radon concentration of 4.0 pCi/L or higher is considered a safety concern where mitigation is highly recommended. A radon concentration of 4.0 pCi/L is the same as smoking 8-10 cigarettes a day or 200 chest x-rays per year.

How Do You Test?

Our company uses Air-Things, Corentium Pro, Continuous Radon Monitors. These monitors are calibrated annually and regularly cross-checked to comply with Radon Measurement Quality control standards. Monitors take hourly snap-shots of Radon levels, temperature, pressure and humidity. The radon monitors have tilt-detection sensors to alarm radon professionals if the device has been moved during the testing period. This helps minimize chance for interference or manipulation of radon test results.

Every foundation type is to be tested at the home. If you have a basement, crawlspace and slab, a monitor will be placed over each foundation. 1 monitor is placed for each type of foundation or for areas that are 2,000 square feet and larger.

Is there a Report?

You will receive a PDF of the radon test after the device is retrieved. There is a lot of information on the test. Pertinent information will be highlighted. Here is an example of a Radon Test Report:
